Got Tomatoes?

We always grew a lot of tomatoes in the past years until a couple of summers ago. We have a garden behind our house in the back near some woods. Well, every year we had lots of tomatoes until two summers ago. My husband and daughter had planted 36 tomato plants one warm afternoon.

The next morning my husband went to the garden and something had chewed all of the plants off. All that was left were the stems! I'm not sure if it was the deer or rabbits. We lived here for about 18 years and never had a problem until then.

So, my husband decided to start planting a few tomato plants in the front of our house. The deer don't come in the front of the house so it was safe. Anyways, we have a few tomatoes for eating but not enough for canning. There is a neighbor who only grows tomatoes and they are really nice ones every year. He lives all alone and gives the tomatoes away since he can't eat all he grows.

He's been giving plastic bags of tomatoes to my elderly mother and she had too many for herself. She did can some for herself but gave me quite a lot of tomatoes.  I canned two different times now. Once I had enough for 12 quarts of tomatoes. The last time I had enough for 13 quarts of tomatoes. So I have 25 quarts which will be good for making chili when the snow flies. My daughter likes to use them for making her homemade spaghetti sauce recipe. They taste a lot better than the canned tomatoes you buy at the store. Hopefully, I'll get some more tomatoes to can from my mom's neighbor friend. If not, I'll have to buy some. Do you can tomatoes?

  1. I've always wanted to try canning, but never have. That's nice that people are willing to share their garden produce with each other.
