S is for Story Book Review & Giveaway! ENTER AT THE LINK ABOVE!! READ ON TO LEARN ALL ABOUT IT!

Do you have a child who is an aspiring writer? If so, I have the book for you: S is for Story: A Writer’s Alphabet. You can also find other book reviews here. First a little about the publishing company, Sleeping Bear Press:

Since our first success with The Legend of Sleeping Bear (Official Children’s Book of Michigan) in 1998, Sleeping Bear Press has impressed young readers, parents, teachers and booksellers with high-quality, beautifully illustrated picture books. As a small regional publisher based in Chelsea, Michigan, we’re proud to say that readers throughout the country know us by name. Our authors and illustrators are visiting more schools and bookstores than ever before. Our books have inspired sterling reviews, won awards, have been featured in presentations and even found their way under the White House Christmas tree. No matter our size, our goal remains the same: Provide books that enrich children’s lives through stories that blend entertaining text with educational content.

Now, a decade after the publication of The Legend of Sleeping Bear, our list has continued to grow and expand. In addition to our widely known Discover America Sate-by-State series, we have more than six different series including our Tales of Young Americans and our newest series Tales of the World.

What is S is for Story: A Writer’s Alphabet Book about?

What is a first draft? What is a narrative? In S is for Story: A Writer’s Alphabet, author and writing coach Esther Hershenshorn uses the alphabet to help explain, explore, and examine the tools, techniques, and strategies for those hoping to live the literary life. Writing terms and topics are explained using a two-tier format.

C is for the Character,
every story’s star,
the one for whom
we cheer, we care,
with whom we travel far.

Specific genres, story elements (setting and plot), and the mechanics of how to write (including editing and revision) are covered, while quotes from famous authors provide examples of the writer’s thought process. Budding writers of all ages will be inspired to put pen to paper (or fingers on keyboards)!

My take: Once again the two-tier writing format works so well. I love that I can read my children the first tier and then read the 2nd tier for myself. This book covers so many aspects of what it takes to be a writer. There are even writer’s tips for aspiring writers! The illustrations were a huge hit with my boys. They spent several minutes on each page looking at the different characters and details.

A teacher’s guide is also available for download.

S is for Story: A Writer’s Alphabet retails for $17.95
