Karissa's Birthday Party

Karissa's 24th Birthday

My daughter's birthday was yesterday and we had a party at my mom's house.  I can't believe it was 24 years ago when she was born.  The time really did fly by.  Now she is finishing her college education this Spring and is taking her last two classes in Italy.  It's a study abroad program with the college and about 16 students and 2 professors are going.  While in Florence, Italy they are going to take a trip to Rome also.

My husband and I am very proud of Karissa.  She is an intelligent girl and is a hard worker also.  She is going to have a double major in Graphic Design and Art.  Karissa worked for about 2 years while going to college so she saved some money to go on the trip.  It will be a wonderful experience and she is excited to see all the art and eat the food there!

He Is Risen......He Is Risen Indeed

Today is a joyous day for all Christians.  Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday and after three days he rose from the dead.  He died for all of our sins so that some day we may live in heaven with him if we believe.

Happy and Blessed Easter to all of my readers!  I hope you all have a good day with your family.

Silence on Good Friday

Today my family went to our Good Friday church service.  It is a day where you think about Jesus dying on the cross for all of our sins.  When I think of all the pain and suffering he did for us it is sad.  We don't understand a lot of things and won't till we get to heaven some day.  Then all of our questions will be answered.

At the end of the service the organist played an eerie loud sound and the pastor slammed the bible shut, in remembrance of the end of Jesus' life.  Every one was supposed to walk out of the church in silence, which is a way to reflect and remember.

The pastor always goes to the cemetery across the street from the church after the service.  I imagine he looks at all the names of the souls who have passed away in the last year and from years before.  I've noticed he has been doing this the last few years when we were leaving church.

Sunday will be a happy day because Jesus rose from the dead and the tomb was empty.  I hope all of you have a Blessed Easter and remember what the day is really about.  It's not about Easter bunnies, Easter egg hunts, or just another holiday to get together.

The Happiest Baby Guide To Great Sleep Book Review

My children are young adults now but I was interested to review The Happiest Baby Guide To Great Sleep Simple Solutions for Kids from Birth to 5 Yearswritten by nationally celebrated pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp.

Harvey Karp, M.D., America's favorite pediatrician, now focuses his unparalleled knowledge, experience, and insight on solving the #1 concern of parents everywhere: sleep.  With The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep, Dr. Karp-arguable the world's foremost parenting expert and bestselling author of The Happiest Baby on the Block and The Happiest Toddler on the Block-offers invaluable tips on how to help your newborn, infant, or toddler get the rest they need, while debunking some of the most widely held myths about babies and sleep.

When my three children were young they didn't want to go to sleep or have a regular bedtime.  I had a two year old and baby twins and it was impossible to have a regular schedule for sleep, let alone anything else.  Sleep was something that I longed for and I was always tired.  I wish this book would have been available for tips at that time.  My adult kids don't have any problem sleeping now, ha, ha.  Especially sleeping in the morning.

This book is filled with so much information that I don't know where to start but I will.  I'm going to tell a little bit about the chapters and some information I found interesting.

Chapter One tells about the science of sleep and understanding the facts and myths about sleep.  One thing it said was that "our brain craves a twenty-five-to twenty-six hour day!"  Also that over the past fifty years the average adult nighttime sleep dropped from eight hours to about seven.  No wonder people are so tired these days.

Chapter Two lists the top ways to reduce your baby's risk of SIDS or suffocation which all parents should read.   It also has information about how much sleep you can realistically expect in those first months, and information about whether it's a good idea to share the bed with your baby.

Chapter Three focuses on helping your baby fall asleep from birth to three months.  I read that turning on your baby's amazing calming reflex is easy once you can do the 5 S's (swaddle, side/stomach position, shush, swing, suck) correctly and in combination.

In Chapter Four one statement was that "postpartum depression is real, treatable...and sometimes even preventable".  I'm sure a lot of mother's would be interested in finding out that "10 to 30 percent of all new moms develop PPD.  That virtually makes PPD a national epidemic!"

I learned in Chapter Five that "even when babies sleep, they still feel, hear, and see.  The early morning light filters through their closed eyes, soft spot, and thin skull, turning off their melatonin and turning on their circadian rhythm alarm clock".

Chapter Six and Seven deals with sleep problems from three to twelve months of age.  A fact that I learned is that fatique makes adults sleep better but it's not the same for infants.  It can make them wired and restless.  Also that bed-sharing is not a good thing because it can lead to poor sleep.

A Key Point in Chapter Eight was "like struggles falling asleep, popping awake at night can happen when your little one is too revved up; something's disturbing her (teething, etc); she's learned the wrong sleep cues; or she's going down too early (or too late)".

One thing I learned in Chapter Nine was to not let your baby sleep in the same room as your other toddler child until the younger child is around two years old.  You never know what a toddler will offer the baby, such as crackers, metal trucks, or something dangerous to them.

Chapter Ten dealt with the big changes in your tot's verbal and mental abilities and I learned that having a TV in your child's room increases sleep struggles and obesity.

On to Chapter Eleven I learned that overexcitement and stubbornness can lead to troubles at bed time.  Maybe that's why I had trouble with a couple of my kids, ha, ha.

In Chapter Twelve it focused on helping your one to five year old sleep all night.  A point which I found interesting was that hunger to growing pains to pinworms can prevent your child from sleeping soundly.

Chapter Thirteen listed that some reasons tots wake up cranky.  Reasons given were the bedtime could be too late or their sleep could be upset by sounds, lights, or internal sleep stoppers like teething.

In Chapter Fourteen a key point that I found interesting was that a child's nap time will shift from twice a day to once...to none.  The ends of naps marks your tot's passage into childhood.

Chapter Fifteen dealt with "Red Alerts and Special Situations" such as asthma to seizures, and other medical problems that can keep your child awake and tips to help them from ruining your night.

All in all I liked this book and it is full of a lot of information to help you and your child have a better sleep.  I would recommend it to anyone.

First Spring Flowers

I just looked outside today and saw some beautiful color!  My purple crocuses popped out among some brown leaves and my husband said they were already out yesterday!  They are a sure sign that Spring is really here and warmer weather is coming our way.  I'm excited to finally have winter be over.  It seems like we've been hibernating forever!

Bunch of Crocuses Among the Leaves

Beautiful Purple Crocus

It has been a long winter and today hubby was outside doing some yard work.  He raked some dead leaves around the yard from last fall and trimmed a few trees also.  There are also some other flowers popping out of the ground which are daffodils.  They won't bloom for a little while and are white and yellow in color.  Isn't Spring wonderful!  Below are the daffodils.

Birthdays of Celebrities for March 27th

I thought I'd do something different and looked up some birthdays of some famous celebrities for today.  I can't believe Gloria Swanson was born 1899.  I remember her in the movie Sunset Boulevard with William Holden.  David Janssen was the actor in the television show The Fugitive which was also made into a movie with Harrison Ford.  Michael York is an English actor.  A movie he was in was Austin Powers:  The Spy Who Shagged Me.  Quentin Tarantino's latest movie Django Unchained is one of my favorite movies and the last movie I've seen at a theater.  Mariah Carey and Fergie are great singers.  Mariah is a judge on American Idol this year, although I don't watch it anymore.  I miss Steven Tyler for a judge, and Simon too.  Fergie is a singer with The Black Eyed Peas and I just read that she is pregnant for the first time.

Travis Making Potato Pancakes

I have twin sons who are 21 years old and one likes to cook occasionally.  If Travis gets hungry for something he just makes it himself.  He got hungry for potato pancakes recently and so he made potato pancakes.  Travis did everything himself.  First he peeled the potatoes and onions and cut them in chunks and put them in a blender with a little flour, an egg, and salt and pepper,  and chopped them up.

All Ready For The Frying Pan

 Serious Cooking

Then he fried quite a few pans full of them.  Travis is good at cooking so I'm sure he won't have any problem when he moves out some day.  I told Travis I was going to put some pictures on my blog and he didn't care, so here they are.  The potato pancakes were good too!

The New Pond's Luminous Line Products - My Review

Now that Spring will soon be here I want to get my body luminous looking!  What  makes me feel luminous is feeling good about myself and keeping myself in shape.  I'm feeling better since I lost five pounds and am walking lately.  I'd like to lose another five or even ten pounds so I have to stick with it.

Another great way to make me feel luminous is taking care of my skin with some awesome products like Ponds.  I received the Pond's Luminous Line products to try and was really happy with them all!  They all have a wonderful fresh scent and I was so excited to get to try them.  The first product I tried was the Pond's Luminous Clean Wet Cleansing Towelettes to get my makeup off. The towelettes package says "wet cleansing towelettes with soft white kaolin clay & moisturizing ingredients".  It completely got all my makeup off and the towelettes were really nice and soft like it says.  They are the best make-up remover towelettes that I have ever used before.

After using the Pond's Towelettes I tried out the Pond's Luminous Clean Daily Exfoliating Cleanser.  The bottle says it "deep cleans and exfoliates dull skin to renew its radiance with soft white kaolin clay & gentle microbeads".  I smoothed some on my face and neck, then rinsed it off.  It really left my face feeling smoother and great feeling!

I certainly had to try out the Pond's Luminous Clean Cream Cleanser after that.  The bottle says "gently draws out trapped impurities & make-up to brighten dull skin".   My skin was getting a great beauty treatment.  I smoothed some on my face and rinsed with warm water and it felt like heaven!  After using all these I felt really refreshed and my face felt like it was glowing.

The Pond's Luminous Moisture Day Lotion with SPF15 says "replenishes moisture & protects from sun-rays for luminous skin all day".   It is nice and creamy and  I'm going to use this under my makeup from now on.  I want to be protected from the sun when I'm out walking too.

I highly do recommend all of the Pond's Luminous Line products!  They are all great for your skin and make you feel wonderful!  They are also reasonably priced.  You can get the complete Luminous Line for yourself at mass retailers, select drugstores and supermarkets nationwide for a suggested retail of $4.99 - $5.79.

Right now Pond's is having a contest on the Pond's Facebook page called the POND'S® 30-Day Luminous Photo Challenge.  You can enter a photo of your luminous face and have a chance to win a $500 Walmart Gift and the entire line of Pond's Luminous Facial Cleansers and Lotion.

My Mishap With 3 Quart Cans of Paint

Okay, I'm sometimes the "in a hurry type of person" when I want to do something.  I don't like to take many trips to the car to get the groceries to take in the house.  This said, Saturday was a day that was not good on a trip home from getting cans of paint.  They were only quart cans and the store didn't give me a bag (I'm blaming them partly also).

I got home and put the car in the garage.  Next I grabbed the 3 quarts of paint and opened the car door.  Well, you can only guess what happened next.  One of the cans of paint slipped out of my hands and the top came off and paint splashed all over the garage floor.  Me, like a dummy walked into the house and told somebody to come and help me clean up the mess.  I then tracked paint which I had stepped in and tracked it in the house and had tracks in the garage too.

My jeans and shoes were splashed with paint and a good coat I had on had paint on it too.  My twin sons helped me out.  One of them started wiping the tracks up and the other one started wiping the giant spot of paint after I got the worst of it.  I kept getting pails of hot water and bringing them out to him.  My daughter washed my shoes off.

Thinking I had all the spots off my coat I washed it and dried it until it was pretty well dry.  Then I went to hang it up and saw some dried paint spots on the back of the sleeves that I had not seen before.  One of my sons got some paint on his good sweatshirt also.

So, now I didn't know how to get dried paint out of clothes and looked on the internet for idea.  One was rubbing it with some paint thinner but we didn't have any of that.  The other idea was soaking the clothes in cold water.  Well, I have been soaking the coat and his sweatshirt for over a day now and the paint is still there.  Maybe I'll have to get some paint thinner and try that, but I don't want to ruin my coat or my son's sweatshirt.

I didn't want to take time to take a picture of the mess but you can imagine a quart of tan colored paint on a cement garage floor and splashed all over with tracks leading into the house.  Yes, it is kind of funny but what a mess!

Chocolate Beer Cupcakes With Whiskey Filling And Irish Cream Icing

Ingredients

Original recipe makes 2 dozen cupcakes
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Line 24 muffin cups with paper liners.
  3. Bring Irish stout beer and 1 cup butter to a boil in a saucepan and set aside until butter has melted, stirring occasionally. Mix in cocoa powder until smooth.
  4. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a bowl until thoroughly combined.
  5. Beat eggs with sour cream in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low until well combined. Slowly beat in the beer mixture, then the flour mixture; beat until the batter is smooth.
  6. Divide batter between the prepared cupcake cups, filling each cup about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean, about 17 minutes.
  8. Cool the cupcakes completely. Cut cores out of the center of each cupcake with a sharp paring knife. Discard cores.
  9. Bring cream to a simmer in a saucepan over low heat; stir in bittersweet chocolate until melted.
  10. Mix in 2 tablespoons butter and Irish whiskey until butter is melted; let mixture cool to room temperature. Filling will thicken as it cools.
  11. Spoon the filling into the cored cupcakes.
  12. For frosting, whip 1/2 cup butter in a bowl with an electric mixer until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes.
  13. Set mixer to low speed and slowly beat in confectioners' sugar, 1 cup at a time, until frosting is smooth and spreadable. Beat in the Irish cream liqueur; adjust thickness of frosting with more confectioners' sugar if needed.
  14. Spread frosting on filled cupcakes.

Cook's Note:
  • Types of alcohol I used are: Red Stripe Beer instead of stout, Jameson Whiskey, and Baileys Original; my filling isn't really that thick when I cooked mine so if it's kind of thin it's okay. I actually added a lot of Baileys to my frosting because the butter would never get fluffy enough but it turned out fine.
